Abstract
This study aims at discussing about the characterization of Frank and The wife as the main characters in D.H. Lawrence’s short story. The limited of this study is analyzing the province of mind of the main characters based on psychoanalysis theory in the short story. The method used in this study is qualitative because most of the data describes about the main characters based on psychological aspect through the dialogues, monologues, and the actions. This study used one main theory and several supporting theory as well in order to obtain the relevant analysis between the theory and the statement.Based on psychoanalysis theory by Freud (1923) the writer want to analyze how the province of mind of the main characters such as Id, Ego, and Superego can give influence of the personality and personal characterization that are describes in the short story. In the result the characterization of Frank was dominated as good character such as confidence, brave, caring. And the wife’s characterization was dominated as bad character such as introvert, apathetic, uncaring. Based on the finding of the study, it was found Frank and the wife’s characterization were mention as province of mind such as Id, Ego, and Superego by Frued (2008) province of mind gives influence to Frank and the wife characterization to do bad or good things.
