Abstract

This study aims to describe the characteristics of the patriarchal system and the main character’s response to the patriarchal system in the novel Tiger Daughter (2021) by Rebecca Lim. Published in 2021, the book tells the story of Wen, a young girl navigating the challenges of growing up in a deeply patriarchal immigrant family, where rigid traditions and societal expectations often suppress her autonomy and potential. Wen’s struggles reflect the systemic discrimination and oppression women face within patriarchal structures, as well as the journey toward empowerment and self-liberation. The writer used a qualitative approach, presenting the collected data through descriptive analysis. This study focuses on the feminist theory of The Second Sex (1949) by Simone de Beauvoir to develop the analysis, exploring how the patriarchal system is portrayed in Tiger Daughter. Based on the analysis, several symptoms of the patriarchal system are depicted in the novel. The results of this study showed that there are four symptoms of the patriarchal system: male dominance and control, lack of autonomy and power, gendered roles and expectations, oppression and discrimination. Additionally, the study highlights various responses and actions taken by the main character to fight against the patriarchal system, including essential freedom and individuality, rejecting traditional gender roles, economic independence, solidarity among women, critique of male philosophies, and education as a tool for empowerment.
