Abstract

The aims of this study are to identify the categories of translation shift, to analyze how the categories that are applied by the translator, and to identify the dominant category shift. The source of the data is Stephenie Meyer’s novel entitle Eclipse in English edition (published in 2007 by Little, Brown, and Company in United States of America) and in Indonesian edition (translated by Monica Dwi Chresnayani and published in 2008 by Gramedia Pustaka Utama in Jakarta). Qualitative approach is used to analyze the data. Then the result of this study is as follows: there are 52 data of class shift, 43 data of unit shift, and 39 intra-system shift. Therefore the dominant shift is the class shift. The three shift categories of translation shift are used to make the texts translated become appropriate in Indonesian as the target language.
