Abstract

This study focuses on finding the characteristics of mythological gods in American Gods novel by Neil Gaiman which was published by Harper Torch in 2001. The writer studies the amount of gods character mentioned in the novel, their characteristics and how they are seen from classical mythology perspective. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. This method describes the analysis in the form of essay. The theory used is based on Carl Jung’s collective unconscious. As the result, the writer found sixteen gods character includes Odin, Loki, Suibhne, Czernobog, The Zorya Sisters, Anansi, Kali, Anubis, Thoth, Hinzelmann, Eostre, Wisakedjak, Johnny Appleseed, Media, The Technical Boy, and The Black Hats. Each originated from various cultures, which are Norse myth, Irish myth, Slavic myth, African myth, Hindu myth, Egyptian myth, Germanic myth, Algonquian folklore and American folklore. The writer also found that the author mostly uses direct presentation to describe the characters in the novel. Keywords :Literature – Criticism – Mythology – Characteristics
