Abstract

This study aims at identifying and classifying types of African American Vernacular English in Beloved novel using syntactic features. In conducting this study the writer used qualitative method. The theory of Wardhaugh was used to discuss the types of AAVE. The result of this study showed there are five types of syntactic features, such as special uses of be, lack of be, employs constructions, negation (Use of ain't as a general negative indicator and negative concord), and special auxiliary verb uses of been. The most dominant type of AAVE which occurs in beloved novel is the use of ‘ain’t. The theory of Holmes was also used to discuss speech functions.The result of this study found there are four types of speech functions such as expressive, directive, phatic, and referential. Expressive function is the most dominant speech function found in Beloved novel. Keyword: Sociolinguistics, African American Vernacular English, Standard English, Speech functions, Novel.
