Abstract

This study aims to classify the associative meanings contained in selected comments from the @nytimes Instagram account through Leech's theory, as well as to find out the function of language from those comments. The data for this study were taken from selected comments on the @nytimes Instagram post on December 14, 2023. The theory used in this study is Leech's (1981) semantic meaning theory and five functions of language. This study uses a qualitative method that presents analysis in written form. This study found the percentage of each meaning as follows: 20% contains connotative meaning, 40% contains affective meaning, 30% contains collocative meaning, 4% contains reflexive meaning, and 6% contains social meaning. In addition, the percentage of each function was obtained: 13% of the data contained directive function, 66% of the data contained expressive function, 16% of the data contained informational function, and 5% of the data contained phatic function. The most dominant type of meaning that appeared is affective and the function is expressive. This is because affective meaning is related to a person's feelings and expressive function is useful for expressing a person's feelings.
