Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of self-confidence in the music video by Meghan Trainor through a semiotic lens. This discussion is related to the meaning of visual signs. In this research, the writer uses Roland Barthes' theory with three levels, denotation, connotation, and myth. The writer uses qualitative research methods by applying descriptive data procedures through images. The results of this study found 110 data from two music videos that have implied meanings given by Meghan Trainor to show images that illustrate the denotation, connotation, and mythical meanings of self-confidence. The writer uses two music videos from Meghan Trainor, namely All About That Bass and Made You Look, and there are 110 data. The first 60 data from the All About That Bass music video and only 10 data out of 60 contain self-confidence. From the Made You Look music video, there are 50 data and only 10 scenes that contain self-confidence. Keywords: Semiotic, Visual sign, Self-confident, Music video, Barthes theory.
