Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the types of borrowing words from foreign language into English, which are taken from Harper’s Bazaar articles. Then, this study analyzed the semantic changes occurs in these borrowing word. This study used Hockett’s theory in 1958 to find out the types of borrowing words. Additionally, Baugh’s theory in 2002 is used to analyzed the semantic change occur in borrowing words. The research methodology involves a qualitative descriptive approach. The study identified that there are 34 data of borrowing words found based on Hockett’s theory. The results show that there are two out of three types of borrowing words found, loan word and loan blend. There is no finding of loan shift. There are 23 data of loanword being the most dominant types, and there are 11 data of loan blend found in this study. In addition, there are three types of semantic change discovered in this study, there are extension of meaning, narrowing of meaning and degeneration of meaning.
