Abstract
This study entitled “Defense Mechanisms in Half Brothers Movie (2020)”. The goal of the study is to examine the defense mechanisms used by the primary characters in the movie Half Brothers (2020), which is directed by Luke Greenfield. This comedy-drama portrays the journey of two estranged half-brothers, Renato, a prosperous aviation executive from Mexico, and his American half-brother Asher, as they undertake an unexpected road trip across America to discover the truth about their father. During this journey, the characters confront their past, acknowledge their differences, and face their deeply ingrained psychological defenses. This study employs Sigmund Freud theory of defense mechanisms as its main framework and uses a qualitative methodology to analyse how the characters unconsciously engage in mechanisms like repression, projection, denial, and rationalization to manage their emotional conflicts and traumas. The movies narrative is thoroughly examined to identify these defense mechanisms and to assess how they shape the characters behaviour, relationships, and paths to personal growth. The findings of this study indicate that the protagonists’ use of defense mechanisms plays a critical role in their interactions and the resolution of their internal conflicts, finally guiding them toward reconciliation and self-discovery. Keywords: defense mechanisms, denial, repression, Sigmund Freud.
