Abstract

This study aims to describe the word formation processes and meanings of sports jargon in CNN.com, ESPN.com, NBA.com, VolleyballWorld.com, and NDTV.com sports news articles published in 2023-2024. This study applied the descriptive-qualitative and documentation method in analyzing the data by selecting and taking a note the jargon related to badminton, basketball, football, and volleyball in the news articles above then explaining based on their word formation processes as well as the meanings. This study found 23 jargon are formed by borrowing processes (1 data), acronym processes (2 data), compounding processes (11 data), derivation processes (8 data), and multiple processes of blending and derivation (1 data). In terms of meaning, there are 9 jargon have a conceptual meaning and 14 jargon have an associative meaning. It proves that the jargon in badminton, basketball, football, and volleyball are made from the existing language. It influences the dominance of the associative meaning found in the jargon to facilitate the communication among the sports practitioners. Keywords: Jargon, meaning, word formation processes.
