Abstract
The thesis was entitled “A Semantic Study on Figurative Language Used in Taylor Swift’s Selected Song Lyrics”. The aim of the study was to find the types of figurative language used in Taylor Swift’s selected song lyrics and to analyze the real meaning of the figurative language used in Taylor Swift’s selected song lyrics. The object of the study was the selected songs from the Midnight album by Taylor Swift. The writer used theory from Abrams & Harpham (2012) to identify the types of figurative language and to analyze the data. A qualitative method was used to collect and analyze the data. The results showed that there were 105 lyrics that contained figurative language. Allusion appeared 2 times, irony appeared 4 times, metonymy appeared 5 times, simile appeared 9 times, personification appeared 11 times, symbol appeared 13 times, metaphor appeared 16 times, and hyperbole appeared 45 times.
