Abstract

This study entitled The Depiction of Beauty Myth in Sarai Walker’s Dietland aimed to analyze the depiction of beauty myth on the main character and how the beauty myth positions women as objects. The analysis of the depiction of the beauty myth on the main character and it positions of the main character's life as an object were elaborated using the beauty myth perspective (Wolf, 2002) entitled The Beauty Myth. The study uses an approach of the qualitative method in which the data collected is presented in the form of descriptive analysis. The study emphasizes how difficult it is for the main character to live up to society's expectations of beauty. As she strives for thinness, she faces traumatic events and challenges that expose society's outdated standards of beauty. Her life is negatively impacted by these concepts, which cause her to struggle and be always hungry while dieting, lose focus, and spend a lot of money on clothes and cosmetic surgery. Her well-being suffers greatly as a result of these beauty standard tropes, which also highlight how impossible it is to live up to social expectations.
