Abstract

The purpose of this study, titled “Into The Wild Film (2007): Alienation And Basic Human Needs” is to explore reflections on the issue of alienation portrayed in the film, with a focus on the main character, Chris McCandless. Additionally, this study delves into how Chris resolves his alienation by addressing basic human existential needs. The method employed utilizes a qualitative approach through a narrative essay explanation, incorporating dialogues, narration, and scene images. Guided by Fromm's (2008) theory of alienation in humans, which posits that modern individuals experience disconnection from meaningful relationships and the natural world, resulting in feelings of alienation, loneliness, and frustration. Fromm (2008) further emphasizes that humans are fundamentally driven by basic needs such as relatedness, transcendence, rootedness, a sense of identity, and a frame of orientation. The findings reveal that Chris's alienation is depicted as stemming from isolation, including his detachment from family, rejection of societal expectations, and extreme motivation in the search for meaning and freedom. Furthermore, it is evident that Chris resolves his alienation by fulfilling basic human needs, aligning with Fromm's (2008) proposed framework.
