Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe racial discrimination in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry novel by Mildred D Taylor and how the racial discrimination influences society. To analyze this novel, the writer uses the theory from Herbing and Glick (1976) and Schaefer (2010). Qualitative method is also applied to analyze some dialogues and actions that are shown in this novel. In addition, the data taken from libraries and internet are used to get some information which support the study. This novel describes about Logan, a black family struggling to maintain human dignity and personal freedoms in racist Mississippi. In Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry novel there are some conflicts about racial discrimination between White and Black people in America that influences a society. In this study, the writer found 11 incidents of racial discrimination. The racial discrimination happens in this novel because they have differences about skin color, race, and social class. This study could be useful for English Department students. Keyword: Literature, Novel, Sociology, Racial Discrimination.
