Abstract

This study is entitled “Thanatophobia: Death Anxiety in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Film” which aims to analyze the issue of thanatophobia by using theory on thanatophobia. The object of this study is the animated film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish which was released in 2022 by DreamWorks Animation. The film tells the story of Puss in Boots who is struggling to free himself from thanatophobia. In analyzing the film, the writer applies theory on thanatophobia by Ernest Becker (1973). This study applies descriptive qualitative method and the analysis is conducted in essay form based on narrative and cinematography elements. This study focuses on the depiction of thanatophobia experienced by the main character and how he deals with the issue. As a result, the main character experiences predatory thanatophobia which triggered by six factors throughout the film: injury, the death of others, loss of body parts and closest people, change of space, interruption and deprivation of something and loss of protection. The main character deals with thanatophobia through denying death, evading death and freeing himself from thanatophobia.
