Abstract

This thesis “The depiction of beauty standards in the novel Dietland by Sarai” analyzes the problem of beauty standards depicted in the novel “Dietland”, explains how this problem affects self-esteem, and investigates how the characters struggle with the problem of beauty standards. The novel “Dietland”. Plum Kettle plays the main role in this novel and faces many obstacles before knowing the meaning of beauty that must be perfect in a work and friendship environment where the reality of beauty is one of the characters. The analysis in this study is presented in written form using qualitative methods. The findings of this study describe the main character's beauty ideals. The result of this research is the theory of “Myth of Beauty” (1991) by Naomi Wolf to support this research. In the novel “Dietland” it is found that the issues of beauty myths that occur are issues of beauty myths in hair, body, skin, and face.
