Abstract

Religious stigma against Muslims has increased in Western countries after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2011. Muslims are disadvantaged by being associated with this stigmatized identity. This study aims to analyze the stigma against the main character in the novel Native Believer (2016) by Ali Eteraz. The study focuses on the stigma against the main character’s beliefs as a minority religion and the main character’s resistance towards such stigma. To guide this research, the writer used the perspective of Erving Goffman (1963) on stigma. This study applies the qualitative research method to provide the analysis. The analyses show that stigma is portrayed by oversimplifying and uncritical justice that can lead to discrimination, prejudice, and hatred against minorities. In resistance to the dominant group, stigmatized people tend to isolate themselves to protect their personal identity from being associated with stigma and prove to society by negotiating self-identity that regardless of their religion, it does not make them less normal in society.
