Abstract

This study entitled “Deviant Behavior in Gillian Flynn’s novel Sharp Objects” described the representation and the causes of deviant behaviors toward the character in Gillian Flynn’s novel Sharp Objects by using (Merton, 1968) theory. The purpose of this study is to explain the main character’s deviant behavior in the Novel Sharp Objects. To find out the factors that cause the deviant behavior of the main character in the novel. The writer used a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the study. The result of this research found that deviant behavior can be influenced by several factors, especially environmental and social factors. However, the factors of deviant behaviors can influence the main character’s life towards herself who feels her life is not comfortable, ostracized by the community and haunted by anxiety. Deviant behavior also arises because they did not receive the attention and affection of a parent completely. Keywords: Deviant behavior, Environment, Parental role, Social life.
