Abstract

This study discusses the issues of social discrimination and racial identity in the novel Such a Fun Age (2019) by Kiley Reid. This study contains theory from Karl Marx (1999) regarding social discrimination. The novel discussed in this study tells the story of the main character, Emira Tucker, a black woman who works as a babysitter in the Chamberlain family. In this story, Emira is depicted as often dealing with social class dynamics and racial discrimination. In the incident where she was working to care for a white baby, Emira was accused of being a criminal because she was of the person with low social status. The incident can be analyzed through Marxist theory which discusses how hierarchy and power can contribute to social discrimination. Karl Marx’s (1999) theory on the other hand explains how social bias impacts Emira. This research uses a qualitative method and discusses in general the forms of discrimination received by the main character and how she deals with the struggles. The results of this study show that the main character in this story experiences social discrimination in the form of racial discrimination which makes her vulnerable to black stereotypes and also the hate speech she receives from other people. Nevertheless, at the end of the story, this study shows that the main character succeeds in facing social discrimination by adapting to differences and also to strengthening her own identity.
