Abstract

The purposes of this study are to examine identity confusion and its impact on a Mexican diaspora as shown in the novel Mexican whiteboys (2010) by Matt De La Pena. Danny is a diaspora who experiences identity confusion because he feels too white among Mexicans and too dark among Americans, and the confusion makes him engage in self-harming action as a way to escape from reality. The theory applied in this study is Stuart Hall’s (1997) concept of Cultural Identity and Diaspora. This study employed the qualitative method in which the author thoroughly explores, comprehends, and evaluates the dialogue and the narration in the novel. The result shows that Danny regrets his hybridity. It is shown as he always tries to hide the fact that he is a mixed-race kid and eventually engage in self-harming action to seek comfort.
