Abstract

The aim of the study is to identify the types and analyse how translation shifts are employed in translating two languages, from English to Bahasa Indonesia. The object of this study is the subtitle of a show named Friends: The Reunion Special Show (2020). This study uses a qualitative method to analyse and reveal the implementation of translating words, phrases, clauses, and sentences from one language to another. The data are analysed through words and quotation by using Catford's (1965) theory and presented in the form of essay. There are two conclusions found as the result of this study. First, the content of the thesis written is based on the five types of translation shifts that were found in the object, then adjusted to their respective groups based on the factors that affect the occurrence of the translation shift. The further result finds out that in 40 cases analysed, 80% appears in the Category Shifts, whereas the rest 20% is in the Level Shifts. This draws conclusion from the Catford (1965) theory that the shift in translating happened based on two factors, namely linguistics, and cultural factors.
