Abstract

This study aims to describe the depiction of gender performativity reflected on the main character in This Is How It Always Is and to find out the effects of being transgender performative in This Is How It Always Is Novel. This study is entitled “Gender Trouble: Locating Gender Performativity in Laurie Frankel’s This Is How It Always Is Novel. The object of this study is a novel by Laurie Frankel This Is How It Always Is. It describes how the main character expressed his gender identity in the performances. This study is sought with a qualitative method in order to reveal the issue of the novel. This study was applied theory from Judith Butler (1990), Gender Trouble. The result of this study found that the main character performs his gender roles opposite with his genital or sex in which he is acting feminine rather than being masculine such as dressing like girl, acting like girl, and changing his name into girl’s name. It is also found that the main character got bully because of his appearance does not match with his sex. Then, he was being isolated by society because the stigma on transgender or people who is wearing cross- dressing are considered as a deviant behavior, that is why they are avoiding him or even make fun of him.
