Abstract
This research study aims to analyze the hegemonic masculinity towards women, namely the portraits of hegemonic masculinity and the impacts of hegemonic masculinity. The object of this research is a feminist novel entitled Women Talking (2018) by Miriam Toews. The women characters in the novel experienced hegemonic masculinity such as oppression that happened in the Manitoba Colony of Bolivia. This study uses qualitative methods and the feminist theory of Hegemonic Masculinity (1987) from Raewyn Connells about Gender and Power to reveal the problem. It can be concluded that the results of this study are men subordination to women, and they have more strength than women, both in terms of physical strength, opinion, and other aspects. One example is a problem that occurs in the novel Women Talking by Miriam Toews, where it can be seen that the hegemonic masculinity towards women is represented by the portrait of oppression such as sexual abuse, violence, and manipulation, and even if they do not get the right to justice, and protection from such cases. Then the impact of hegemonic masculinity is represented by the act of making the female character feel hurt both physically and mentally. From the problems that occur, it can be interpreted that there is hegemonic masculinity towards women from men. This is of course very concerning for women who become victims, where the impacts will threaten their physical and mental health which will be disrupted as a result of the pressure and trauma they are facing. Keywords: hegemonic masculinity, manipulation, sexual abuse, the impacts of hegemonic masculinity, violence
