Abstract

This study aims to analyze the portrayal of traumatic neuroses and how the main character uses her defense mechanisms to cope with her traumatic neuroses which occurs in the novel The Way I Used to Be (2016) by Amber Smith. The novel describes the traumatic neuroses of a sexual abuse victim who is still considered a child as she was raped in her adolescence. The method that applies to analyze the issue is qualitative research in the form of narrative text. To reveal the main character’s traumatic neuroses and her defense mechanisms, this thesis uses Introduction to Psychoanalysis (1920) by Sigmund Freud. The result of this study shows that the main character as a child sexual abuse victim suffers from some traumatic neurosis such as fear, feeling guilty, doing some activities compulsively, and even searching for satisfaction by complying with her libido.
