Abstract

This study aims to identify Dunkirk's film's anxiety and defense mechanism using Freud's (1977) theory. This study's data source is the utterances and the scenes from Dunkirk's film. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach. The result showed that the movie Dunkirk depicts various forms of anxiety experienced by the main character in a stressful war situation. 21 scenes show anxiety by the main characters. Based on the analysis described, the scenes show realistic emotional reactions to the battlefield's physical threats, uncertainties, and moral dilemmas. In analyzing the movie Dunkirk, the writer can identify several feelings of anxiety that appear in various scenes. Most scenes fall under realistic anxiety, a direct response to physical danger on the battlefield. However, one scene shows neurotic anxiety stemming from a deeper internal conflict. All these feelings of anxiety are reflected in the character's conscious mind, except in the neurotic anxiety scene, which is related to the subconscious mind. In looking at the defense mechanisms used in scenes of anxiety in Dunkirk, the writer can conclude that the characters in this film tend to rely on various defense mechanisms. The most used mechanism is sublimation, where characters divert their negative energy into positive, beneficial actions. The characters in this movie tend to divert their negative energy into positive, beneficial actions, such as acting heroically in war situations. In addition, mechanisms such as projection, intellectualization, denial, displacement, regression, rationalization, reaction formation, and repression are used in various scenes. These reflect how the characters try to overcome their internal conflicts and maintain their emotional balance amidst the stressful and dangerous situation on the battlefield. The analysis of anxiety and defense mechanisms in the film Dunkirk reveals the complexity of the characters in dealing with the highly stressful situation of war. It illustrates how humans have different ways of coping with their psychological distress and internal conflicts in challenging situations like war.
