Abstract

The purposes of this study are to analyze the types and the factors of using positive politeness strategies in the interview video. The object of research in this study is the interview video by David Letterman and Billie Eilish on netflix. In analyzing the data, the writer used the theory of Brown & Levinson (1987) with a qualitative method. The results of this study indicated that David and Billie’s utterances contain thirty-seven utterances. In total, 37 of their’s utterances, the writer found there are 13 various types of positive politeness strategy such as: 4 noticing and attending to hearer, 5 of exaggerating, 4 intensify interest to the hearer in the speaker’s contribution, 1 using in-group identity markers, 8 seeking agreement of repetition, 1 avoiding disagreement, 3 presupposing, raising, or asserting, common ground, 1 offering and promising, 2 being optimistic, 1 including both speaker and hearer in the same activity, 3 giving or asking for reasons, and 4 giving gift to hearer goods, sympathy, understanding, and cooperation. From these utterances, the writer found that the strategy "seeking agreement of repetition" is the strategy that most frequently employed which appears 8 times in the conversation. Moreover, some factors also influenced their utterances such as: social distance and relative power. Out of 37 utterances, the writer found social distance is the major factor and the most often appears in the video which appears 26 times. This because David and Billie have a quite close relationship, despite the significant age gap between them, they effortlessly maintain a casual and balanced conversation as friends.
