Abstract

The objectives of this study are to analyze the protagonist's causes of defense mechanisms and to explain the defense mechanism issue in the Wolf Hollow (2016) by Lauren Wolk. The story is telling about the experience of a twelve-year-old girl named Annabelle. At the age of still a teenager, Annabelle experienced the unpleasant feeling when a bully entered her previously peaceful life. In this novel, it is depicted that Annabelle experiences various forms of defense to protect her feelings and emotionality about what happened to her. This study used psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud (1917) in the book A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis and Ego and Defense Mechanism theory by Anna Freud (1966). Therefore, this study used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze and interpret the narrative elements in order to build an understanding of the defense mechanism and the protagonist’s response. The results show that the main character uses seven defense mechanisms as a method of defense formed by the ego to protect her feelings and emotions from unpleasant physical or verbal trauma, events, and memories. Apart from that, there are causes and effects that influence the soul of the main character, thus forming various kinds of defense mechanisms.
