Abstract

Dysfunctional family is a social phenomenon where a family is not functioning as it supposed to be. This condition can cause positive and negative impacts to one's who experience this condition. This study aims to analyze the condition and find the impacts of dysfunctional family as it reflected in Groosham Grange by Anthony Horowitz using the theory from Bassem Abbas Al Ubaidi from 2017 in his journal entitled “Cost of Growing Up in Dysfunctional Family”. This study only focuses on the main character’s (David Eliot) experience in the novel. The qualitative method is use in this study. The objectives of the study are to explain the portrayal and the impacts of dysfunctional family that is faced by the main character. The analysis result is the main character shows behavioral impacts as the result of the condition in his own family such as how the main character has low self-esteem, he tends to seek another dysfunctional family as a support system, and he finding it hard to follow a task from the beginning to the end. keywords: low self-esteem, seeking dysfunctional family as support system, the lost child.
