Abstract

This study aims to identify the phases of identity crisis and role confusion experienced by the main character in the novel The Life of a Banana by PP Wong (2014). This novel tells the story of a 12 year old girl named Xing Li who lives in London. Xing Li is what some Chinese people refer to as a banana since it is white inside and yellow outside. When her mother dies, she moves with her older brother to live with venomous Grandma, strange Uncle Ho and Hollywood actress Auntie Mei. This thesis aims to analyze the reflection of identity crisis and the way of the main character dealing with it. To analyze the novel, this research uses Erikson's theory entitled Identity: Youth and Crisis (1968). This study used the theory of Erikson, the stage of development of human life to find identity crisis in the novel. Qualitative methods are also used in this research because the research results will be presented in text form. This research found that the main character faces a problem, namely an identity crisis based on theory by identifying the main character's behavior towards the surrounding environment. The study result show that the main character experience discrimination, unfair treatment by other that lead her to experience an identity crisis. And she deal with the identity crisis by being part of the society. She shows that she experiences pressure when she has to make choices that change her life and experience an identity crisis. In addition, the findings show that identity crisis have the potential to have a negative impact on the people that are experiencing it in their social life.
