Abstract
This study is entitled “Racial Prejudice in David Chariandy’s Brother”. It analyzed the portrayal of racial prejudice that the main characters experienced and how the protagonists respond to the portrayal of racial prejudice from the novel entitled Brother by David Chariandy. The story told about a black family, a mother and two sons named Michael and Francis, living in a flat without a father. The family struggled to live in peace in a society which treats them badly just because of racial prejudice occurred around them and it caused them many problems that come at the same time. The story also told about how they tried to get out from the situation and face it all. The analysis used the theory of racial prejudice by an expert, Gordon W. Allport, (1954) and a qualitative approach to support the analysis. The study aimed to find out the act of racial prejudice and the way the protagonists respond to it. The result showed that there are four acts of racial prejudice that were portrayed in the story; antilocution, avoidance, discrimination, and physical attack. The last act of racial prejudice which is Extermination was not portrayed in the story. Moreover, this study also showed that the protagonists gave different response to the act of racial prejudice they experienced such as fighting and avoiding. The study explained that there are almost all of the acts of racial prejudice occur in the study and the responses that the protagonists showed are different and influenced by the characteristic of the protagonist.
