Abstract

This study aims to identify the types. sub-category, and the factors of politeness strategies in Joe Biden's speech denouncing Russia's invasion of Ukraine that was uploaded on NBC News YouTube's channel on February 25th, 2022. This study used qualitative content analysis. This study used Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory about politeness strategies to analyze the data. Based on the analysis, it was found that there are 20 utterances by Joe Biden contain politeness strategies. There are 20 utterances consisting of 5 bald-on-record politeness strategies, 10 utterances in positive politeness strategies, two in negative politeness strategies, and three in off-record. In his speech, Joe Biden's speech about Russia getting invasion by Ukraine has different purposes. The sub- categories of offering and concern for the hearer's wants in positive politeness are more dominant than the other sub-categories. In contrast, in negative politeness, both are included in the hedging sub-category. In his speech regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it can be concluded that Joe Biden tried to show concern and attention to the audience, especially to Ukraine as a country in conflict. In addition, the power factor is also very dominantly used, which shows the power and influence possessed by the United States as a large country. In his speech, Joe Biden used language indicating that the US has the power and ability to act, including assisting Ukraine. In situations like this, the power factor can be significant and have a major impact on the outcome and success of the interaction. Keywords: Joe Biden, politeness, speech, strategies
