Abstract
This study aims to analyze physical stigma toward the protagonist through stigmas such as stigma actions and the character's response to stigma actions. This study is entitled “Physical stigma in the novel “The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell” by Robert Dugoni (2018). The object of this study is a novel entitled “The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell” by Robert Dugoni (2018). The physical stigma is directed to Samuel Hill, who has rare genetic or red eyes. Moreover, strangers and classmates label him as 'Devil boy' or 'Sam Hell'. Even the pious nuns are discriminatory in their care of him. Sam's experiences in his developmental years are life-changing, and the suffering follows him into young adulthood and affects his decisions and relationships. This study applies the qualitative approach method as the analysis is presented in text and narratives. This study applied theory by Erving Goffman entitled Stigma: notes on the management of spoiled identity (1963) about situations of the individual stigmatized who is disqualified and rejected by normal people. The results of this study are physical stigma experienced by the protagonist, such as clod stares, pitying words, and mockery because he has different attributes—moreover, the protagonist's responses to stigma action by self-isolation, self-conscious, self-derogation, and avoiding contact with the normal.
