Abstract
This study aims to analyze the politeness strategies in a talk show video in selected episode entitled “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on YouTube. This study focused on Nicole’s and Taylor’s utterances, as the guest stars. In this study, the method used is descriptive qualitative, which means describes the analysis in the form of an essay. The writer uses Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory to analyze the data. The result reveals that there are 53 utterances containing politeness strategies which are found in the video, including 36 data classified as positive politeness, 8 data as negative politeness, 4 data as bald on record, and 5 data as off record. In addition, positive politeness is the most frequently used by Nicole and Taylor while bald on record as the most rarely used by Nicole and Taylor in “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”. From the data analysis, this study also found 2 factors that influenced the speaker employs politeness strategies, namely power and social distance.
