Abstract
This study aims to portray systemic racial discrimination in Nafissa Thompson-Spires' novel, examining its impact on the characters and their responses. The primary focus is the collection of narratives in 'Heads of The Colored People: Stories' (2018), exploring how systemic racial discrimination is depicted, how the protagonists in Heads of the Colored People deal with systemic racial discrimination, and the effects on character experiences. The novel delves into the lives of African-American characters as they navigate microaggressions, racial stereotypes, unequal opportunities, and the emotional toll of confronting systemic racial bias. It highlights their responses to racial injustice and the multifaceted impact on their identities and relationships. This analysis employs a qualitative approach to study the concept and effects of systemic racial discrimination in the narratives. The study uses Joe Feagin's theory of systemic racism as presented in Systemic Racism: Theory of Oppression (2006). The results found in this study that Heads of The Colored People: Stories (2018) effectively portrays systemic racial discrimination as a central theme, shedding light on its profound influence on characters. The narratives showcase the intersection of racial discrimination with other dimensions like class, gender, and personal relationships, emphasizing the multidimensional nature of the characters' experiences and broader societal dynamics.
