Abstract

The study analyzed racial passing and the struggle it caused to the main character in Brit Bennett’s The Vanishing Half novel. The object of this study was a novel and the data found were analyzed through words and quotations by using the racial passing theory from Belluscio (2006). The qualitative method was used in this study to analyze the data and to shows the struggle caused by the racial passing in the novel. The result of this study showed that there are four varieties of racial passing depicted in the novel. Racial passing as fun, racial passing as convenient, passing as out of economic necessity or advantage and crossing over completely to the white race. The study also found that the passer can still struggling with racial passing years after passed. The struggle was not only experienced by the passer but also by the family member left behind.
