Abstract

This study aims to analyze the linguistic landscape in Pondok Pesantren (Ponpes) Darul Muttaqien. The theoretical framework used in this thesis is the theory of Landry and Bourhis (1997). There are two problem formulations in this research, and the first is the language display in the linguistic landscape and the function of the linguistic landscape. The study uses a qualitative method. The writer uses a qualitative method to explain and interpret the language display on sign from result observation. The writer found several language displays used in the linguistic landscape, such as monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual. The writer obtained 117 signs collected from observations in the boys' and girls' dormitory areas of Pondok Pesantren Darul Muttaqien. The writer also found five languages installed in the boys' and girls' dormitory areas: Indonesia, Latin, English, Arabic, and Chinese. All sings are installed at Pondok Pesantren Darul Muttaqien as building name signs, direction signs, order and prohibition signs, informative signs, and promotion signs. Arabic – English is dominant at Pondok Pesantren Darul Muttaqien. In addition, using various languages displayed on signs at Pondok Pesantren Darul Muttaqien has a vital role in presenting information to the students through the writings listed on the signs. The reasons for displaying various languages are: to introduce foreign and local languages contained in the signs at Pondok Pesantren Darul Muttaqien.
