Abstract

This study aims to describe the types of systemic racism and the characters' responses to racism in the novel The City We Became (2020) by Nora K. Jemisin. The writer uses an approach of the qualitative method in which the data collected is presented in the form of descriptive analysis. The writer focuses on Joe R. Feagin's theory from his book, System Racism: A Theory of Oppression, to develop this study. This analysis focuses on how systemic racism is depicted in the novel The City We Became by Nora K. Jemisin. According to this book, System Racism: A Theory of Oppression, racial systems institutionalize and maintain an unfair allocation of privilege, resources, and power between white people and people of color. The writer then focuses on the main character's dealings with systemic racism in this study, which is also related to Joe R. Feagin's theory from his book System Racism: A Theory of Oppression. He founded the theory based on the reality and history of anti-Black racism, as well as the strategies of resistance for overcoming racism, such as withdrawal, resign acceptance, verbal confrontation, and physical confrontation. Based on the analysis, there are several types of racism depicted in the novel. The results of this study show that there are two types of systemic racism, namely, alienated social relations and related racial domination: discrimination in many aspects. Apart from that, this study shows various responses and actions of the characters facing racism, such as withdraswal, resignation acceptance, verbal confrontation, and physical confrontation.
