Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the gender stereotypes against women portrayed in Lessons in Chemistry (2022) novel and how the main character deals with the gender-based stereotypes she received. The discussion focused on the standards and expectations on women in various aspects, from work, school, even their daily lives. The object of this study is a novel titled Lessons in Chemistry (2022) written by Bonnie Garmus, telling the story of Elizabeth Zott, a single mother who works hard to earn a living for her daughter and herself, while being ridiculed and stereotyped for being a woman. The qualitative research methodology and narrative language is used in this study to provide the analyses. To guide this study, Judith Butler’s perspective on gender performativity (1999) is applied. The findings of this study proved that gender is only a social construct and does not fix an identity to a certain sex. Gender does not dictate how one should or should not act, behave, dress, think, nor let other people question their life choices.
