Abstract

This study investigates the grammatical features of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) as found in the movie "Coming 2 America" (2021) and compares them to Standard English (SE). This study utilizes the theories of Howe (2015), Wolfram (2014), and Rickford (1990, 1997). Using a qualitative and descriptive approach. The study reveals systematic differences in subject-verb agreement and verb usage when comparing AAVE with Standard English. Notably, AAVE's use of the invariant "be" contrasts with the variable forms in Standard English, exemplifying the dialect's unique grammatical structure. Furthermore, AAVE's use of "ain't" for negation and the presence of "Y'all," a nominal feature, is evident in the film. In conclusion, this study contributes valuable insights into AAVE's grammatical features in "Coming 2 America" highlighting the distinctions between AAVE and Standard English. This study enhances our understanding of linguistic diversity and the portrayal of AAVE in popular media. Acknowledging and appreciating these linguistic variations fosters an inclusive perspective of language use.
