Abstract

This study aims to analyze the hierarchy of human needs represented in Five Feet Apart. The object of this study is the novel entitled Five Feet Apart (2018) by Rachael Lippincott. The protagonist strives to achieve success and fulfill their needs even though they live with cystic fibrosis. This study applies the qualitative research method as the analysis is presented in the form of text. To guide this study, the writer uses the perspective of Abraham Maslow (1943) on the hierarchy of human needs. From the data analysis, it can be seen that every person needs different priorities. This can happen because of her courage and the problems that occur in her life are different. Based on this analysis, this study concludes that the protagonist can fulfill their needs. Despite the physical barriers imposed by their illness, they navigate the various levels of the hierarchy, finding fulfillment and growth along the way. Therefore, fulfilling their needs deeply affects their emotional and psychological well-being of them. The results of this study show that every human can fulfill their needs such as physiology, safety, love, self-esteem, and self-actualization. So, it could be affected in all aspects of life.
