Abstract

This study aims to find out the impoliteness utterances and strategies used to respond the impoliteness which were spoken by Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn in Johnson vs Corbyn: The ITV Debate. Qualitative study was applied to find out the impoliteness and strategies to respond them in Johnson vs Corbyn: The ITV Debate. The data were collected from ITV News official YouTube account which had been uploaded on 20 November 2019. To classify the impoliteness strategies, Culpeper’s theory (1996) was used in this study. From the analysis, there are some findings. First, the writer found all the impoliteness strategies according to Culpeper’s theory (1996) which are Bald on Record impoliteness, Positive Impoliteness, Negative Impoliteness, Sarcasm or Mock Politeness, and Withhold politeness. Second, the writer found the strategies are used to respond the impoliteness were used by Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn to attack each other, to defend, and to utter their vision, mission, and policy if one of them were elected United Kingdom Prime Minister.
