Abstract

The study aims to identify types and functions of politeness strategies represented in the YouTube video Catching Up with Jessi by Dive Studios podcast. The writer used a descriptive qualitative analysis. This study used Brown and Levinson’s (1987) perspective on politeness strategies to analyze the data. From the data analysis, it was found that of the 42-politeness utterance. There are 8 bald on record, 27 positive politeness, 6 negative politeness, and 1 off record. The speakers used bald on record to give a task, followed by positive politeness to show interest, approval, or sympathy. Then, there is also negative politeness to convey their surrender, and the speakers use off-record language to show the metaphor in their words. It can be concluded that the type of positive politeness strategy is found more often than other strategies. The writer can also see that each utterance has functions of using politeness strategies based on the intention each type shows in expressing their words. Based on the analysis, the exaggerate function is more dominant than other functions, because it relates and supports by the type of positive politeness to express the speaker’s interest.
