Abstract

This study aims to analyze the violation of the maxims of the main character in the movie The Fault in Our Stars. Specifically, this study aims to identify the types of maxim violations and find out the function of each violation uttered by the main character. This study uses Grice’s cooperation principle theory to analyze the types of maxim violations during interaction, and Cook’s theory to determine the function of maxim violations. This study applies a qualitative descriptive approach. The data was collected from utterances spoken by the main character containing maxim violation when interacting with other characters. 29 data found in this study, the results show that there are 3 types of violations committed by the main character: 10 violations of the maxim of quality, 11 violations of the maxim of relationships, 8 violations of the maxim of manner, and 0 violations of the maxim of quantity. Based on their function, maxim violations can be done with any functions: to keep a secret, create hyperbole or irony, change the topic, create humor, and respect the listener. Based on the function of maxim violations uttered by the main character, it was found: that 11 data functions to keep a secret, 14 data functions to change a topic, 3 data functions to respect the listener, 1 function to create humor, and 0 function to create hyperbole or irony. The results of this research indicate that maxim violation is a phenomenon that still often occurs in interactions, which can be carried out in various ways with different functions.
