Abstract

The objectives of the study are to analyze the types of flouting maxim and the functions of the flouting maxim in the talk show from Daebak Show. The method that is used in this study is a qualitative method. This study uses the theory from Grice (1975) about the maxim and the flouting maxim and the theory for the function of the flouting maxim from Cutting (2002). The writer finds that there are 28 conversations that flouted the maxim in the talk show Daebak Show episode 132. The results show that the dominant maxim that is flouted are the maxim of quantity with the 11 excerpts (39%), the maxim of relevance with 9 excerpts (32%), the maxim of quality with 5 excerpt (18%), and the maxim of manner with 3 excerpts (11%). Moreover, the functions of the flouting maxim are to give too much information with 10 excerpts, too little information with 1 excerpt, changing the topic with 9 excerpts, and sarcasm with 3 excerpts.
