Abstract

This study aims at knowing what types of semantic shift (words meaning changing) that some Coldplay’s song lyrics and how the writer explains the meaning of words and phrases as semantic shift in those selected lyrics. The data of this analysis were collected by choosing some lyrics in Coldplay’s songs that tend to have meaningful words or phrases so that the writer was much easier to analyze and categorize them into some types of semantic shift. The songs chosen entitled; The Scientist, Viva La Vida, Every Teardrop is a Waterfall, A Sky Full of Stars, Paradise, Fix You, and, Princess of China. There are only six types of semantic that found by the writer in this analysis. They are narrowing, broadening, amelioration, pejoration, metaphor, and metonymy. the semantic shifts found in the song lyrics mostly belong to metaphor and metonymy types since the song lyrics are kind of literature that used more illustrative words. The words used are mostly left the denotation meaning behind. Besides, the metaphor is best described indirectly and beautifully. Some words or phrases may become more positive, some may be more negative, some may be widen or narrowed, and the rest may be neutral.
