Abstract
This study is entitled "Identity Crisis: Main Character's Low Self-Esteem in Niko Draws a Feeling by Bob Raczka" (2017). This study discusses the issue of identity crisis in the picture book and focuses on discovering the depictions of the identity crisis and how the protagonist deals with it. The picture book tells the story of a boy called Niko. He loves to draw his world: the ring-a-ling of the ice cream truck, the sun's warmth on his face, and the hard work of Mother Robin. He draws to express his feelings; in some situations, he shows his drawings to friends, parents, and his teacher. However, all he gets is confusion. This situation makes him sad, but one day, he meets a new neighbour called Iris. She looks at Niko's drawings and gives him appreciation; this makes Niko happy, and they become friends. This study used a qualitative method by applying the theory of psychosocial developed by Erikson (1963) to obtain evidence about the identity crisis influenced by low self-esteem in the main character. The study's results showed that an identity crisis that occurs due to a lack of need for love, a sense of belonging, and appreciation can lead to internal conflict and affect self-change in the main character. Niko gains respect and a sense of togetherness as a friend in facing an identity crisis. Therefore, it indicates that the role of relationships with others like friends, teachers, and parents in his surroundings can be helpful for the protagonists in dealing with an identity crisis. Keywords: identity crisis, isolated, picture book, psychosocial developed, self-esteem.
