Abstract

This research aims to analyze the issue of racial stigma and its impact that is depicted in a novel. The object of this study is a fiction novel entitled “We Are Not Free” by Traci Chee (2020). The depiction of racial stigma is also closely related to the actual occurrences in the real world. The study draws upon Erving Goffman's stigma theory, originally proposed in 1963, which examines the negative beliefs, attitudes, and stereotypes attached to individuals or groups based on their racial or ethnic background. It is a pervasive social phenomenon that has significant implications for individuals, communities, and societies as a whole. This study uses a qualitative approach, with a narrative descriptive method that the writer applies to describe and interpret racial stigma and its impacts in the selected object. The analysis of this study indicates that racial stigma emerges from historical, cultural, and institutional factors perpetuating racial inequalities and fostering prejudice and discrimination. The characters in the novel serve as a reflection of the broader societal dynamics at play. Individuals who experience racial stigma often grapple with lower self-esteem, psychological distress, and mental health issues as a result of the persistent discrimination they face.
