Abstract

The study is entitled “Politeness Strategies in Meryl Streep talk show with Emma Watson” which the writer uses qualitative method to analyze politeness strategies in the YouTube channel. The purpose of this study are to figure out the types of politeness strategies and to examine the intended meaning of the politeness strategies applied from the conversations in the video. To guide this study, the writer used the perspective of Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory and the writer found there are 17 positive politeness strategy, 3 negative politeness strategy, 6 bald on record strategy, and 4 bald off record strategy. The findings of this research show that in expressing their utterances, the speakers applied positive politeness strategies is intended to express their closeness and followed by the use of negative politeness are intended to show their disbelief. Then, there are also use bald on record is mostly intended to express disagreement with other people's opinions and bald off record is intended to express the metaphor in their words.
