Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the issue of environmental degradation in Chris Renaud's The Lorax (2012). This writing raises two main issues, namely how environmental degradation can occur which results in two main problems, namely, deforestation and air pollution and how the characters overcome these issues. Furthermore, as a guide in this research, the writer uses Timothy Morton's (2016) theory of dark ecology. This theory deals with the concept of how human activities can cause environmental degradation and there is no accountability from the people who carry out these activities. That means the theory explains that humans who are not responsible for their activities can cause environmental degradation. Then, the method used in this research is a qualitative research method that presents data analysis in essay format, which is taken from the scenes and dialogue in the film. Furthermore, the objective of this writing is to analyze the form of environmental degradation that occurs. Thus, the result of this research is that there are two forms of environmental degradation, namely deforestation and air pollution. The problems of both forms of environmental degradation are depicted in the film. Furthermore, the author also discusses the ways used by the characters to deal with the issue of environmental degradation, such as replanting trees and convincing residents to return to planting native trees.
