Abstract

This study aims to analyze the issue of hegemonic masculinity reflected in male characters in the novel Concrete Rose (2021) by Angie Thomas and to describe how the main character, Maverick, deals with hegemonic masculinity. In this study, the writer uses a descriptive qualitative method. The writer uses the theory of Raewyn Connell's Masculinities (2005) theory book, which focuses on the social construction of masculine identity and how this identity is influenced by factors such as culture, history, politics, economics, and sexual orientation. The results of the analysis show that the main character, a young father who is poor and considered incapable of living the rigours of life, is positioned within the dominant and idealized concept of masculinity by society's stereotypes. Furthermore, to accept the character society's stigma of hegemonic masculinity, Maverick is portrayed as the norm of a strong and resilient man who can overcome adversity without showing his feminine weakness.
